My chest tightened.
“Ethan, please. Give me a little time. I’ll talk to your father.”
I reached for him.
He pulled away.
That hurt more than anything Richard had said.
Then Ethan picked up the duffel bag, walked through the front door, and disappeared without looking back.
For the next twelve months, I tried everything.
I called him every week.
I texted almost every night.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
Random mornings when I woke up wondering whether he had eaten breakfast or had somewhere safe to sleep.
Ethan never responded.
Not once.
Richard showed almost no concern.
“If he can’t survive on his own,” he said one evening, “then I was right about him.”
I stopped arguing.
But I never stopped waiting.
Then last Thursday, while Richard was at work, someone knocked on the front door.
I opened it.
And for a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Ethan stood on the porch.
He looked completely different.
Thinner.
Exhausted.
Rain soaked his hair and darkened the shoulders of his coat.
In one arm, he was holding a tiny newborn wrapped tightly in a hospital blanket.
In his other hand was an old suitcase with a broken handle.
“Ethan?”
My voice came out as a whisper.
His eyes lifted toward mine.
I wanted to hug him.
I wanted to demand answers.
I wanted to apologize for an entire year in one breath.
Instead, I stared at the baby.
“Where have you been?”
He said nothing.
“Whose baby is that?”
